ABOUT WE/US
always moved by love never driven by intimidation
Our practice expands across multiple mediums including textile, collage, sculpture, performance, video and film, and encompasses an artistic journey in which we investigate our Surinamese background in relation to our upbringing in a West-European culture. The political thread in our work raises questions about the African Diaspora’s movements and it’s relation to feminism, sexuality, racism and the history of slavery. We studied fine arts at the Gerrit Rietveld Academy in Amsterdam and completed postgraduate studies at the BAK in Utrecht. We have been a faculty member of the Decolonial summerschool organized by Walter Mignolo and Rolando Vázquez. Are a member of KNAW(Royal Dutch Institute of Science), The Black Renaissance Collective and The Lockward Collective. We have exhibited nationally and internationally and were the first Black woman in the Netherlands to be commissioned a slavery monument : Monument for Fight and Resistance for the city of Utrecht, Our critical reflection on the Braunschweig Colonial Monument titled Liberating the monument won an international contest . The proposal of the Lockward collective for a Decolonial memorial EarthNest in Berlin was selected and has been inaugurated. Museum Boijmans van Beuningen en De Kunsthal commissioned us to curate an interactive installation on Rotterdams colonial past. Four major musea in the Netherlands purchased Guess who's coming to dinner too? An installation showing a Decolonial reflection on Judy Chicago's The Dinner party. We have exhibited in numerous international solo and group shows. Our work is part of public and private collections. For more info please contact Gallery Akinci:
