OUR LIGHT WILL OUTLAST THEIR FLAGS

In collaboration with Roland Vázquez we used early 20th century postcards, depicting images of people who were shown in ‘Human Zoo’s' in Europe. Interwoven with Dutch Colonial war flags from the VOC, WIC, and the City of Middelburg, these tapestries symbolize the epicenter of the Dutch slave trade. Intentionally left 'unfinished,' the loose threads serve as a metaphor for unraveling the “colonial gaze” and deconstructing the power of the colonizer. Audiences are invited to physically transform the weavings by pulling the threads, shifting strength into vulnerability. This art of weaving reflects our connection to the universe and our place within it, reminding us of the fragile threads that bind us to the Earth.
